What's a trip?

Voyage Vault helps you organize travel with Trips, but what exactly is a trip? Is it when you visit a country or a city or maybe a tour of Europe?

Yes. A trip is basically any travel, lodging, and activities that you want to group together.

Cruises

Voyage Vault also support a Trip Style for cruises. You get to choose your ports of call and which days are at sea.

Trip Groups

If you want to keep a series of trips together, use a trip group style. This lets you add as many trips as you want and monitor your spending at both the individual trip level and the group level.

Side Trips

There are times when you're in a city and you want use it as a home base to visit nearby places. With standard trips, this would cause a warning in Voyage Vault that you have overlapping dates. The solution is to add the other trips as side trips.

Managing Money

The budget is the deciding factor in most cases. Do you want to visit three countries and set one budget for that whole trip or do you want to break out your budget by location?

Since different places can vary widely in cost, we often recommend that you break out your trips into specific locations. This allows you to view your vacation in France as three trips to Paris, Lyon, and Nice, with separate budgets for each city.

Managing Dates

It can be helpful to break up travel to multiple cities in the same country into multiple trips. In the example below there are three trips in Kenya. If this was listed as one trip for Kenya with the start and end dates of Aug 19 – 29, you couldn't immediately see how long your spending in each city. Breaking up a country into multiple trips also allows you to track travel between cities and the costs for each one. If you want to look at Kenya for budgeting purposes, wrap these three cities in a trip group called "Kenya" and you have the granularity to examine individual cities or the country as a whole.
